Dear
Gusties from the class of ’65,
This is
your fall letter, and you are receiving it in December! The mail is slow this time of year, as you
know! The fall months zoomed right past
me. How about you? Curt and I arrived at our Florida condo the
end of October, and how quickly it’s time to return to Minnesota for some
holiday shopping, baking, decorating and Christmas gatherings. Here in Florida there are Christmas lights
on houses, the stores are decorated and advertising like crazy, holiday songs
are on the radio, but still it’s not quite the same as Christmas in
Minnesota. I look forward to returning
in a few days.
The
Gustavus campus was beautiful this fall…I was there for the Class Agents’
meeting in September. This was probably
my 15th year of attending, and the alumni staff continues to impress me with
their organization, content of the meeting, and just what a nice and competent
group of people they are! If you have

Curt and I
were also on campus in October, as we attended the 40th Nobel Conference on
“The Science of Aging.” This was our
first time to participate. It was
outstanding! We attended for the two
days, and stayed through every lecture that was available. As the scientist lecturers introduced
themselves, a common element among their remarks was how unique and very
special this college is. Tim
Robinson was director of the conference.
It doesn’t seem all that long ago that Tim was doing experiments at Old
Main when he was taking those psychology classes. I did not get a chance to say hello to Tim at the conference, as
he was moderator of the panel discussions and often with guest speakers.
143rd Academic Year Begins
Classes began Sept. 8 with 657 first-year Gustavus students and 2,500 in all. Long-standing orientation traditions such as the Square Dance and President’s Banquet have been joined by newer traditions like Gustie Greeter Orientation Groups and the Reading in Common program. These newer programs were created to provide a more meaningful transition and to encourage students to meet others outside their residence hall.
New Residence Hall
Work crews have been busy this summer and fall constructing
a new residence hall on campus. The
goal is to have the building enclosed before winter. The building, located southwest of the football field, will house
200 students in suites and apartments and is scheduled to open for fall 2005.

Athletics Hall of
Fame
The Gustavus Adolphus
College Athletics Department has chosen eight individuals for induction into
its Athletics Hall of Fame. The 2004
inductees include Lori Allen ’88 (golf), Jim Chalin ’76
(basketball), Bruce Edwards ’77 (ice hockey), Barb Jaeger ’88
(soccer), Dean Kraus ’89 (football), Pachi Lopez ’71 (soccer), Greg
Peterson ’88 (golf), and Gary Reinholtz (long-time athletic trainer,
benefactor). This group was honored at
the Athletics Hall of Fame Banquet, which was Saturday, October 16.

Gustavus is once again ranked among the top 100 liberal arts colleges in the nation in U.S. News and World Report's annual college rankings. Gustavus is one of five Minnesota colleges in the top 100 national liberal arts colleges for overall quality (Carleton, Macalester, St. Olaf, Gustavus, St. John’s). The ranking groups schools into categories based on a national educational classification that includes national liberal arts colleges, national doctoral universities (University of Minnesota, St. Thomas), regional master's degree-granting universities (Hamline, St. Catherine’s, Bethel, Augsburg), and comprehensive regional colleges (Concordia-St Paul).

News….
Sandy
Jameston Greer and
husband, Dave, live in the Dallas area.
They spend winters in the Caribbean.
Summers are spent in the Vancouver and Whistler, British Columbia,
Canada area as they have friends and relatives in that area……Dr. Hans Engman
is a retired endocrinologist and was honored as the 2004 recipient of the
CentrCare Health Foundation’s Caduceus Award.
The award is presented to an individual who has demonstrated outstanding
humanitarian and/or charitable medical efforts for the St. Cloud community and
regional area.
Linda
Engstrom Dahlgren
and her husband, Gary ’64, are retired and enjoying volunteering, golfing,
bowling, working on their family genealogy, traveling, and time with their six
grandchildren. They live in Golden
Valley, MN……Karen Nilsson Nelson lives in Staples, MN and serves on the
Minnesota Department of Terrorism and Health Task Force. Their daughter, Lisa Nelson ’95, received
her doctorate in psychology from the Alfred Adler School of Professional
Psychology in Chicago……Jean Olmanson Andreen and her husband, Wayne,
took a four-week trip to Cambodia and Myanmar.
Jean substitute teaches in Huntington Beach and keeps busy with many
volunteer opportunities……Bea Webster Roscoe lives in Aitkin, MN and is a
pre-school teacher in the Early Childhood Family Education Program for the
Brainerd School District, working with four and five year olds. Her husband, Bernie, is vice president with
Security State Bank of Aitkin. Their
son, Matt, lives in Mound, MN and daughter, Leah, is married and lives in Eagle
Lake, MN. Their first grandchild, Kyle,
was born in February.
Marlyce
Pedersen De Rosa
has accepted the position of music director at a local church. She traveled back to Tanzania (her first
time to return) this summer. She wrote
the music for an operetta, which is finished, along with a sampler CD and now
is looking for a producer!……Eunice Madsen Carlson and her husband have
sold their Alexandria, MN home and are building their new home on Norris Lake
in East Tennessee……Jean Brinkman Seppelt is a substitute teacher and
works with the Respect Life Committee at her church to try to help restore the
sanctity of life from conception to natural death through education and
prayer. She also participates in the
Archdiocesan A Community Caring for Life “Cribs for Kids” program. Husband, Dave, guides summers at Lake
Vermillion, son, Michael, is newly married and son, Jon, is a freshman at the
University of Minnesota.
Michael
Sponberg completed
15 years of teaching at Laredo Community College in May. He serves as board secretary of Literacy
Volunteers in Laredo, as well as on the communications and public relations
committee, and is an Elder at Faith Lutheran Church……Bill Holm has a new
book from Milkweed Edition: Playing
the Black Piano. He spends summers
at his little house in Hofso’s North Iceland……Ethel Lind Richard and her
husband are retired and living in Austin, Texas where both of their children
and three grandchildren live.
Do you
realize that next year, 2005, is the 40th anniversary of our graduation? Gustavus’ Homecoming and our reunion is the
weekend of October 7, 8 and 9. Let’s
put these dates on our calendars. It
would be so great to see many of you there.
Call an old pal and make a plan with them. I talked with several people from the class of ’64, and they had
a great turnout and a great reunion last year.
Let’s do the same. For those of
you that reside out of Minnesota, the fall is a great season to return for a
visit. The Friday evening gathering is
in Minneapolis and on Saturday the luncheon, football game, and other events
are on campus.
As we are
close to this season of giving, I am hopeful that we all can remember to send a
gift to the Gustavus alumni fund! Some
of you have already sent a gift, and I thank you very much for remembering
Gustavus!
