Class of 1958
May 2006
Dear 58ers,
A
particularly sad week at Gustavus as we mourn the death of PHIL LINDAU,
classmate, who served the College exceedingly well as a member of both the
Alumni Association Board and the Board of Trustees. Phil chaired the Board of Trustees from 1992-95 and was a strong
supporter of the Three Crowns Campaign, which raised $33 million for
scholarships, technology and the renovation of the Nobel Hall of Science.
He
also chaired the Building a Greater Gustavus Campaign after the 1998
tornado and was awarded the Greater Gustavus Award for his commitment and
generosity to his alma mater. He had
been fighting cancer for several years and, as late as last week, was still
working, laughing and praying with his family and friends.
Few
alumni have contributed as much to Gustavus in so many ways, from his
leadership and ideas to his loyalty and generosity. He enjoyed life in college and after, and we will always remember
his great smile and laugh.
Where
does a letter go from here? Phil shared
our pride in the generosity of the class of 1958. So, he would want to join us in thanking the most recent donors
to the Gustavus Fund:
Lee Anderson, Westen Anderson, Bob Baugh,
Noel Behne, Char Jonson Berndt, Bill Binger, Jan (Neidt) and Anders Bjorling, Agnes Voss Bode, Dick

respectability of the last two years.
There

hear from you again!
There
are 38 of you who have not sent a gift in more than three years. Now is your chance! Make an old class agent happy! Or tell him he should get lost! Do something!
And
now for some Class News.....
ELDON SATTER works as an auditor for the State Department
of Economic Security and lives in Brainerd.
CHUCK and Dorothy BUSCH celebrated their 50th wedding
anniversary last summer. Their oldest
grandchild, Andrea Busch, is a senior at Gustavus and spent the fall studying
in Japan. We are always pleased to hear
from BETH CHOI, the widow of classmate CHANGIK CHOI and her
annual support of the Gustavus Fund in memory of her husband. KAY (JACOBSON) and Reuben 56 CARLSON
are retired in Tigerton, WI. Reuben
works with cancer support groups and will attend his 50th reunion
this spring at Gustavus.
MARJORIE
MCKAY MILLER traveled this
year to Newfoundland, Labrador and spent a month in Australia. That's moving! Duane and DARLENE THOMPSON KRIEWELL are retired and live
in Burnsville. SALLY CLAUSEN TAYLOR,

the retail world and continues to live in Wyomissing, PA. RENEE LINDBERG SMITH passed away last
summer in Overland Park, KS. Renee had
been an interior decorator and corporate secretary. I always enjoyed visiting with Renee in the Phonorama days.
ELLWOOD

full report of his summer travels, which include a visit to his hometown of
Lowry. He also visited with DARRELL and
Patti LORSUNG in Alexandria; JOHN DAHL and HERB LUNDEEN in
the Twin Cities; BOB PETERSON and me in St Peter and NOEL BEHNE in
New Mexico. LINDA (ECKBLAD) and DARWIN
KNOCHENMUS felt the effects of the hurricanes at their home in Jackson, LA
and the slow recovery time in this year after.
They made their annual trip to Toulouse, France to visit their son and
grandsons.
It
was great to have HERBERT ANDERSON on campus for a week in February to
present the annual Transfiguration Talks in Christ Chapel. Herbert is retired, living in Berkeley, CA
where Phyllis is president of Pacific Lutheran Seminary. The Talks involved six homilies in Chapel, I
heard three and Herbert was marvelous.
ROBBIE

grandchild this past year. CAROLYN
