Garrett Paul

Professor Paul teaches in the areas of historical and contemporary theology, ethics, and philosophy of religion. His teaching and research interests include nineteenth and twentieth century theology; Ernst Troeltsch and Paul Tillich; philosophy of history; sociology of religion; ethics and political economy; religion and culture; religion and science; history of religions, especially Hinduism, Buddhism, and Islam. Professor Paul's awards and honors include Phi Beta Kappa; National Endowment for Humanities Summer Seminar; Project Director, National Endowment for the Humanities Research Grant; Fellow, Lutheran Academy of Scholars; Research Fellow, Institute for Ecumenical and Cultural Studies.

His books and articles incorporate the theological, philosophical, and political work of Ernst Troeltsch and Paul Tillich in late Wilhelmine and early Weimar Germany along with comtemporary theological insights into political and social issues. Professor Paul's more significant publications include translations of The Christian Faith and Historicism and its Problems, by Ernst Troeltsch (with David Reid, in progress) and has authored The Emphatic Christian Center; Reforming American Political Practice (with Kyle Pasewark). Professor Paul has also published articles in Papers of the Nineteenth Century Theology Group, Mitteilungen der Ernst Troeltsch Gesellschaft, Christian Century, and Troeltsch-Studien.

Professor Paul is the most senior member of the Religion Department. For many years he served as the chairperson, and he played a significant role in hiring all of the present faculty and shaping the department into its current configuration. At Gustavus since 1983.
