Nobel Conference XXXVIII
The Nature of Nurture
October 1,2 2002

"This is the year they ought to be there -   this is for psych majors."

[Dr. Tim Robinson, Conference Director describing this year's conference and its
relevance to psychology  students.]

Forget the year of the horse; this is the year of the psychologist, at least as far as the Nobel Conference is concerned. The topic of nature versus nurture is truly the psychology major's dream.

We're getting a break from all the physics and chemistry jargon for a year to hear about things we can really sink our teeth into (rather than stare blankly at the speaker and wonder what language they're speaking, like I usually do).

On tap this year are five psychologists, one neuroscientist, and one psychiatrist. It just doesn't get much better than this. There is a topic to interest students in almost every area of psychology. Among the very distinguished speakers are Eleanor Maccoby, the "inventor" of women's studies, and Robert Plomin, one of the world's leading authorities on developmental psychology.

For students who are interested in learning about the speakers before the conference to decide which sessions they want to attend, copies of Nobel Magazine are circulating throughout campus with an introduction by our own Dr. Robinson as well as an article called Through the Looking Glass, which gives a background on each speaker. In addition, books written by the speakers are on reserve at the library. Interested students can check them out before or after the sessions to learn more.

Basically, we may never get an opportunity like this again - seven of the most distinguished psychologists in America and the world all gathered at our front door. Make sure you take advantage of all there is to see and here for these two days. And of course, don't forget to stop and take a little rest in the new giant hand!
