Dr. Morton Ann Gernsbacher

“The Science of Autism:
Beyond the Myths and Misconceptions”

Thursday Evening, April 12

7:30 PM

Nobel Auditorium

Autism has become a hot topic of scientific inquiry. But with the surge of researchers turning their empirical attention toward autism, it becomes exceedingly important to distinguish uninformed stereotype from scientific reality and to move beyond myths and misconceptions. In this talk I shall question critically several commonly held assumptions, for example: Is autism an attachment disorder? Do autistic individuals really "lack a theory of mind?" Is there an epidemic of autism? Does ABA therapy cure autism? If not, what is the best intervention approach?

Gernsbacher received her Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin in 1983, and was an assistant, associate, and full professor at the University of Oregon, from 1983 to 1992, when she then joined the faculty at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she is a Vilas Research Professor and the Sir Frederic C. Bartlett Professor of Psychology. She is a fellow of the Society for Experimental Psychologists, the American Psychological Association (Division 1 and 3), the American Psychological Society, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). She has received a Research Career Development ("K") Award and a Senior Research Fellowship from the National Institutes of Health, a Fulbright Research Scholar Award, a James McKeen Cattell Foundation Fellowship, and a Professional Opportunities for Women Award from the National Science Foundation.

Gernsbacher has served as an APA Distinguished Scientist Lecturer, President of the International Society for Text and Discourse, President of the Division of Experimental Psychology of the American Psychological Association, Chair of the Board of Scientific Affairs of the American Psychological Association, Chair of the Publications Committee of the American Psychological Society, Chair of the Electorate Nominating Committee of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, an advisor to the Nancy Lurie Marks Family Foundation Communication and Autism Initiative and the International Council for Developmental and Learning Disorders, a member of the Governing Board of the Psychonomic Society, the Scientific Review Committee for the Cure Autism Now Foundation, the Medical Affairs Committee of the National Alliance for Autism Research. She is President of the Association of Psychological Science (formerly the American Psychological Society).

The psychology of money, anyone?

Kathleen Vohs, a 1996 Gustavus Psychology alum and former department alumni guest speaker, was recently published in a November 2006 issue of Science. Greg Miller of ScienceNOW Daily News wrote of her research in a November 16 article, "It's often said that money changes people. Now a team of experimental psychologists has found that just thinking of money changes people. With money on their minds, experimental subjects became more focused on themselves - in both good ways and bad." http://www.sciencemag.org/cgi/content/short/314/5802/1154

Dr. Vohs is currently an assistant professor of marketing at the Carlson School of Management, University of Minnesota. She was previously the Canada Research Chair in Marketing Science and Consumer Psychology at the Sauder School of Business, Marketing Divison at the University of British Columbia. She received her B.A. from Gustavus in 1996, and her Ph.D. from Dartmouth College in 2000. http://carlsonschool.umn.edu/Page6301.aspx

Psychology Research Symposium, Fall 2006

Psychology Department Research Symposiums take place near the conclusion of both fall and spring semesters and provide opportunities for psychology majors and anyone else who may be interested to learn about the research conducted in the Department that semester. Methods students, research apprentices, and those conducting directed research projects prepare poster presentations describing their research. Senior Honors students deliver ten to twelve-minute oral presentation summaries describing their honors research at the spring Symposium.

Psychology Honors -- Rachel Elvebak

[The column features Psychology Honors Majors who are currently running research studies in the department]

My name is Rachel Elvebak and I am a senior psychology major with a minor in neuroscience.  I work for the psych department at the student desk, have been selected as an academic assistant, and am also a tutor.

As a member of PSI CHI, the honors society for psychology students, I enjoy helping promote interest and involvement in the field of psychology.  I am involved in BPLP and am a coordinator for the Elders Program.  Through Elders, Gustavus students meet at a nursing home once a week to play games and chat with residents.  Many GAC students have also been paired with a resident and visit them regularly.  (There will be an opportunity to make Valentines for the residents of the St. Peter Nursing homes at a table outside the Caf on February 8th and 9th if you'd like to take part!)

I am also working on my honors thesis on auditory processing and am very excited about it.  My advisor, Dr. Janine Wotton, and I are investigating the way we process words in different situations.  I received a scholarship through Sigma Xi to fund my research and will be presenting my results at the Sigma Xi and Spring Psychology Symposiums this May.

I am taking my MCAT this April and am hoping to pursue a career in Medicine after Gustavus.  Right now Family or Internal Medicine with an emphasis in Geriatric Medicine and Behavioral Health would be the direction I would like to go.  If I don't end up going to medical school I will hopefully still end up working in one of those areas.

I hope you all have a happy and fulfilling Spring Semester.  I know it's just going to fly by!

Dr. Janine Wotton went to the Acoustical Society of America meeting in Honolulu in December to present her lab's research. Last year Kristin Welsh (2006), Crystal Smith, Rachel Elvebak and Samantha Haseltine all worked on a pilot project to better understand the influence of room echoes on speech perception. Rachel has been working hard on this project for her Honors thesis this year and has made great progress. She will be able to tell you about it at the annual Spring Psychology Symposium on Friday, May 11 in SSC.

Dr. David Rudek, psychology, had a paper accepted to the annual convention of the Midwestern Psychological Association (MPA) in Chicago, IL on May 3-6. Lindsey Cattau (junior Honors student) is a co-author on this presentation entitled, "The Effect of Maternal Support on Young Children’s Memory Skills".

Congratulations to Samantha Haseltine who won the drawing from among the senior majors whose photos have been posted on the bulletin board at the Cookie & Cider Day drawing for the stadium blanket!

Preparing for the GRE....

Did you know that each student who makes an appointment to take the computer-based GRE General Test is sent a free CD-ROM version of POWERPREP 3 by the test supplier? ETS, the test supplier, states that the POWERPREP CD-ROM is mailed to you automatically - once you've scheduled your appointment to take the test. It can take up to 4 weeks to receive the material so be sure to factor in the processing time when scheduling your appointment to take the test.
