My advice would be to do everything
much earlier than you would anticipate. You'll be so thankful to
have it done and not be running around at the last minute. --
Annie Dokken [Annie plans
to attend grad school for School Counseling at Uof W - River Falls]

My advice to upper classmen that would
like to go onto graduate school is to get started looking the summer before
your senior year starts. It takes A LOT of time to send for information
and research different programs. I spent the whole summer continually reading
program descriptions, and that still wasn't enough time. Two books
that helped me tremendously were: 1. Insider's Guide to Graduate
Programs in Clinical and Counseling Psychology. (This book was
the most helpful because in the back they had a HUGE list of programs throughout
the U.S. and addresses of where to get info about the program)
2. Getting in: A Step-By- Step Plan for Gaining Admission to Graduate
School in Psychology These two books, especially the first one,
gave me an idea of where to start looking and how to figure out what I
wanted in a school. I would recommend to anyone to purchase them if you
are wanting to get your Psy.D. or Ph.D. in clinical or counseling psychology.
-- Kara Derner
[Kara will attend Nova Southeastern
University in Fort Lauderdale, FL to earn a Psy.D. in clinical psychology.

I can't think of any good advice at
the moment, but I can share my plans for next year... I have been accepted
to the Dance /Movement Therapy program at Columbia College in Chicago.--

I would tell the younger students to
get involved in the field, research, or some other hands-on experience
so they can figure out exactly what aspect of psychology interests them
the most. Another tip would be to take the GRE over the summer before
you come back to school so that is out of the way. It really isn't
that bad either. -- Mike Henderson

Explore the road less traveled, but
be sure to enjoy the journey. -- Jaime Peterson [Jaime
future plans include working as a Therapeutic Specialist at Augustana Home
in Minneapolis.]

We celebrated spring at
the department picnic ... (and we hid from the wind)
How windy was it?
.It was so windy that one kite flew by itself.
"Do we want to play volleyball?
...are you kidding?"
One lone kiteflyer who lost her kite.
Kelly won the hula hoop contest!
Kristen was a close second!
Dana won the cutest baby contest!
No frisbee players in this group.

Congratulations to the new 2001-2002 Psi Chi Officers; Co-Presidents
Julie Quello and Andrea Wentzel and Secretary Amanda Larson!!

On Tuesday, May 1, Psi Chi hosted Senior Advice Night in
the Courtyard Cafe. Rachel Peterson, Karen Heidesch, Amanda Martin, Jessica
Schultz, Maggie Happe, Nicole Henrich, Mike Henderson, and Jesse Hedge
talked about their experiences at Gustavus, the application process for
graduate school, their plans for their futures, and gave advice to other
psychology majors on how to prepare for graduate school and careers in
psychology. They were very helpful and answered a lot of questions people
had about graduate schools and how to prepare while in college.

Summer Movie Extravaganza
In my little contribution to the movie industry, I have
two goals this month: one being to tell you about a fantastic movie that
I saw over Easter break, and the other to give a little preview to all
the fantastic movies that I plan on attending in the three months that
I have away from the pressures of school. Summer is a popular time
for movies; big box office hits come out every other week. The Summer
of 2001 will be no exception and it promises to bring many new stars to
the screen and many old stars will have new exciting hits.
Bridget Jones's Diary
This wonderful show that I saw a couple weeks ago stars
Renee Zellweger, Hugh Grant, and Colin Firth. Zellweger's previous
claims to fame include Jerry Maguire and Nurse Betty. The adorable
Hugh Grant had a couple big hits two summer's ago with Notting Hill and
Mickey Blue Eyes, my personal favorites. Colin Firth can be seen
previously in The English Patient and Shakespeare in Love. The story
of Bridget Jones is absolutely amazing. Bridget is an early thirties
single woman looking for the love of her life, or at least a suitable boyfriend.
Her sexy boss, Hugh Grant, is a constant temptation. While Mark Darcy
(Firth) is everywhere she goes. Zellweger really shows the quarks
of being a single woman and the trials and tribulations that she goes through
in her search to define her life. I saw myself in this movie, and
I am quite sure other women will see parts of themselves too. I would
never deem this as a chick flick, it is too hilarious for that, and men
can hold their heads high when walking out of this one.
Here is a preview of the movies coming out this summer
that I would recommend. Summer is a big time for the box office and
this year Hollywood is pulling out all the stops. I hope there is
a little something for everyone.
The Mummy Returns-Starring the original cast of
The Mummy released in 1999 including Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz, this
movie has been much anticipated, by me. It starts May 4th to start
off the big summer blockbusters.
Moulin Rouge-A very theatrical movie starring
Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor, due out May 18, before the big Memorial
Day rush. The blurbs that I have seen look wonderful. It is
a different kind of movie, based off of the Broadway musical.
Pearl Harbor-Being released very fittingly on
Memorial Day, this movie has also been anticipated since last year.
Starring Ben Affleck (I Love Him!!), Kate Beckinsale, Josh Hartnett, and
Cuba Gooding, Jr., this picture was produced by hot shot Jerry Bruckheimer
and promises to be big.
A.I.: Artificial Intelligence-This highly pet
project of Steven Spielberg will come out on June 29. It stars Haley
Joel Osmet, the kid from the Sixth Sense. This movie has a bunch
of mystery surrounding it to this point, but will no doubt do well.
Jurassic Park III-Another sequel like The Mummy
Returns, this movie promises to have different twists, and here Spielberg
has been doing double time. JP III brings Sam Neill and Laura Dern who
starred in the first dino flick. It debuts in theaters on July 18.
America's Sweethearts-Julia Roberts stars as a
secretary to a big Hollywood star, Catherine Zeta-Jones. The biggest
news around this show is the move of its debut to July 18 to compete with
Jurassic Park III at the box office. While it may be a gutsy move,
Julia has a fresh Oscar in her hands and went up against Star Wars: The
Phantom Menace with Notting Hill in 1999 and did extremely well. I don't
think even the dinosaurs can knock the reigning queen of Hollywood off
her throne.
American Pie II-Slatted for a late summer release,
this movie brings back much of the original cast including Jason Biggs,
Tara Reid, Chris Klein, and of course Stifler. Despite the big controversary
surrounding the original, expect Pie II to be just as gross and just as
funny.
Have a great Summer of 2001!!!!!! |
