Our move to cyperspace has taken longer than expected but we are hoping it will be worth the wait. Our new HTML format will allow us to do things we couldn't do before. Most of you are old friends of "Emil's Epilogue" but for those of you who are new subscriber's it is the officical newsletter for psychology majors at GAC. It serves the purpose of informing you of developments in the department, and of important events and opportunities both on and off campus which may be of interest to you. We hope you find it helpful, and that you will send us suggestions on how we can improve it. Psychology Honors Program to Change The Psychology Department anticipates a substantial change to its Honors Program beginning Fall 1997 and this may have substantial repercussions on your plans. For a full description of the proposed changes Click Here Allyn & Bacon Annual Psychology Awards Competition For Student Research Papers In conjunction with Psi Chi, Allyn & Bacon Publishers has announced the annual psychology awards competition for student research papers. Three cash awards have been established and funded by Allyn & Bacon to honor and reward excellence in undergraduate psychological studies. All undergraduate members of Psi Chi are eligible to participate in the awards competition. Past Gustavus winners have included David Menk and Dora Haugen. Deadline for entries is April 1st. Course schedule for 1997-1998
If you are planning your course schedule for next semester and you would like to know what courses will be offered in the Spring Semester of 1998 Click Here for the complete schedule for 1997-1998. Work-study positions in Psychology for 1997-98 Several positions will be available in the Department of Psychology next year for work-study students. First priority is given to Psychology majors. If you are interested in working as an office assistant, a General Psychology lab instructor, a tutor, an animal lab assistant or a research assistant, please see Brenda. Applications are available from her. Dr. Kelly Champion to Join Psychology Faculty Dr. Kelly Champion has accepted the offer to join the psychology faculty at GAC. Dr. Champion will receive her doctorate in clinical child psychology from the University of Kansas. In addition to her clinical work she plans to pursue an active research program which has currently dealt with the interactions between childhood "bullies" and "victims." We hope to have an interview with Dr. Champion in the next issue of "Emil's." For those of you who have looked over your registration forms and have wondered who this "staff" person is that will be teaching abnormal psychology and the "testing" course. Kendall Lecture in Psychology
The 16th annual John S. Kendall Lecture in Psychology will be held Tuesday, April 8th at 7:30 p.m. in Nobel Hall of Science Auditorium. Dr. Colleen M. Seifert will be the 1997 guest lecturer. Following the retirement of former Psychology professor and President of the College, John S. Kendall, this annual lecture was established in his honor. Lecturers are chosen on the basis of showing early potential to make significant contributions to the field of Psychology. Dr. Seifert is a 1980 Psychology graduate of Gustavus Adolphus College. She received two Master's degrees and her Ph.D. from Yale University. In addition, Colleen received the First Decade Award for Career Success in 1990 from the Gustavus Alumni Office. She has received numerous other awards and research grants, and has published extensively. The lecture is open to the public. All Psychology majors are encouraged to attend. MUPC The Minesota UndergraduaPsychology Convention will be held at the Murray-Herrick Center at St. Thomas University. Students from the colleges and universitys of Minnesota will present papers and posters on research they have completed during the last year. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m., with the paper and poster session at 9:15 a.m, 1:15 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. Dr. Margaret Matlin will be the keynote speaker, and will give her presentation "Bimbos and rambos: The cognitive basis of gender sterotypes" at 10:30 a.m. All are welcome to attend, especially those students who may be thinking of becoming involved in research in the future. This could be a "confidence builder." |
