    American Civil Liberties Union
    This organization has a broad agenda but works to defend a separationaist policy in the name of religious freedom. It has also taken the cases of several fundamentalist students who charge their religious rights were abridged by local schools. Major work is litigation.
    American Family Association
    Formerly the National Federation for Decency, it concentrates primarily on fighting obscenity in the mass media and favors consumre boycotts against television programs and sponsors with sex, violence and profanity.
    Americans United for Separation of Church and State
    Once an organization known for its opposition to Catholic power, AU has broadened into an ecumenical organization that undertakes litigation on behalf of church-state separation.
    Christian Coalition
    Formed out of Pat Robertson's 1988 presidential campaign, the organization emphasizes legislative lobbying and mobilizing conservative Christians.
    Eagle Forum
    This group now concentrates primarily on educational issues--opposition to Outcomes Based Education, national standards, sex education, or use of the schools to promote self-esteem.
    Family Research Council
    Principally a research and lobbying group deals with a wide range of issues relevant to "traditional" families. Opposes gays in the military, parental notification of abortions, government sex research, etc.
    **Focus on the Family**
    Provides a Christian perspective on questions of child-raising and family matters. Less engaged in politics, it has become active in the anti-gay rights movement and strongly opposes contemporary feminism. (Focus on the Family does not have a Website, but it can be found on AOL.)
    Institute for First Amendment Studies
    A clearinghouse for information and research on right-wing Christian movements.
    Interfaith Alliance
    An educational and lobbying group that publicizes actions of the Christian Right through reports, press releases, and public statements.
    People for the American Way
    Begun in response to Moral Majority, conducts extensive research on conservative Christian movements and lobbies against their proposals.
