Requirements for the Political Science Major and Minor

Major: 8.5 courses in political science, including PO10, either PO15 or PO20, PO40, PO72, at least two of the courses listed below, and PO99 (.5 course) taken in conjunction with one of the courses listed below and under the supervision of that course instructor:

PO99 can be taken only after completion of PO72 in the junior year and must be taken in conjunction with one of the courses listed above. Normally, PO10, and either PO15 or PO20 would be taken in the first year; PO40 during the second year, and PO72 in the third year in preparation for PO99. The instructor's written permission is required to register for PO99, since normally no more than six PO99 thesis projects will be permitted in any given course. Students should plan carefully which course they wish to take in conjunction with the thesis project, and they should contact the professor of that course during their junior year.

A minimum of five courses for the major must be taken from the Department offerings. January Term courses do not count toward the major. However, a student may count up to one course of independent study in January Term toward the major, with prior approval of the instructor and department; such approval will be granted only for special projects (e.g., student-faculty research). No more than one course credit of internship during the fall and spring semesters can count toward the major. Majors are encouraged, with the help of their advisors, to select relevant courses in other disciplines (particularly the social sciences, philosophy, statistics, history, and foreign languages). Majors are also encouraged to participate in internship opportunities.

Minor: Five courses in political science including PO10, either PO15 or PO20 and PO40.
