The Vasa Wind Orchestra is a 65-member ensemble conducted by Dr. Douglas Nimmo. It differs from the Gustavus Wind Orchestra in that it is specifically designed for students choosing to pursue a lighter rehearsal and performance schedule than is required by the Gustavus Wind Orchestra. Although this ensemble does not tour, it plays a significant and active role in the musical life of many Gustavus students who wish to continue instrumental music study. Like the Gustavus Wind Orchestra, the Vasa Wind Orchestra presents fall and spring concerts on the campus, as well as other programs at the annual Nobel Conference, Family Weekend, and daily chapel services.
The wind orchestras at Gustavus Adolphus College are supported by a broad-based wind, string and percussion program, offering students an abundant opportunity for valuable and insightful musical growth. Other instrumental offerings from the Department of Music include: two jazz ensembles, symphony orchestra, string orchestra, brass choir, woodwind choir, brass quintet, string chamber ensembles, flute choir, woodwind quintet, bassoon guild, an early music ensemble, and two percussion ensembles.
