 Placing Materials On Reserve

Reserve materials are processed on a first-in, first-out basis. Materials falling under fair use guidelines or where permission has already been obtained are generally loaded in 48 hours, with the exception of the beginning of each semester (at which time please allow up to 7-10 days for processing electronic reserves).

Please bring materials - library books, personal copies, or photocopies - to the library with a reserve request form filled out for each one or with a syllabus listing the items. If you wish to have your documents labeled in a specific manner, please clearly note that on the Reserve Request Form. Otherwise we will describe them using our best judgment.

E-reserves

When practical and possible, the library will make digital copies available through the Moodle course management system. The library adheres to U.S. Copyright law and its provisions for fair use. For more information on e-reserves see the Association of College and Research Libraries' Statement on Fair Use and E-Reserves and to the Music Library Association's Statement on the Digital Transmission of Electronic Reserves. The library can assist with processing copyright permissions if necessary and will, within reason, pay permission fees. Please contact your library liaison if you have questions about particular reserve items.

To make processing as efficient as possible, please bear these suggestions in mind.

  • If available through one of the library's databases, stable URLs or links will be posted rather than a scanned copy. If you are aware that a particular article is available in full text in our library databases or is available legally and at no cost on the Web, please let us know.
  • Instructors are responsible for providing all photocopies. If the library owns the print journal or book from which you wish to assign an excerpt, please arrange to have the article or chapter copied before bringing it to the reserves desk.
  • Please provide copies free of staples.
  • The cleaner the copy, the better the quality of the electronic document. A scanner does not have the capability to sharpen a poor quality copy.
  • Flatten books as much as possible to avoid dark areas near the gutter.
  • Avoid “crooked” page copies.
  • The library has some capability to scan and post materials in color. This is limited to documents of ten pages or less (maximum two documents per course).
Fill in a specific “needed on reserve by” date or indicate priority if necessary.
  • If you wish to have your originals returned to you via campus mail, please note that on the Reserve Request Form. If not, they will stay on file in the library until the end of the academic school year.
  • Please include copyright and source information on the first page of each photocopied document. (Example: ©2002 Herbert N. Foerstel, “Banned in the U.S.A.: a Reference Guide to Book Censorship in Schools and Public Libraries,” Westport Conn.: Greenwood Press.)

If you have technical questions about course reserves, please contact Sonja Timmerman (x7561) or Jay Nordstrom (x7558). To discuss fair use or copyright permissions please contact your library liaison.
