Classrooms / Computer Labs

The library has two electronic classrooms for library instruction. These classrooms also function as computer labs when not being used for instruction. The main classroom/lab can be found near the central reference area on the second floor and is equipped with 20 PCs with connections to two laser printers. A second smaller lab equipped with 10 PCs and one laser printer is located at the back of the second floor. Some PCs are also available on the first floor of the library and are located in some of the study carrels.

Hector & Helen Group Computing Rooms

Sid and Courtney with Hector

Rooms 102 (lower level, Chapel side) & 106 (stadium side) are now home to Hector & Helen: Mac minis that each have a wide flatscreen monitor, two keyboards and a laptop hookup. (Hector also has an iSight camera.) These flexible workspaces are perfect for groups writing collaborative papers, creating Powerpoint for group presentations, or working on other computing projects.

Groups may sign up on the calendars hanging on these rooms' doors to reserve them for up to three hours at a time. If no one is waiting to use the room at the end of a reservation, groups may sign up for another 3 hours. Reservations are forfeited if a group is more than 20 minutes late.

The library asks that students follow a few guidelines when using Hector & Helen:

  1. These rooms are intended primarily for group work. Groups have priority over individual users.
  2. Don't hog Hector or Helen. Limit unreserved sessions to one hour if others are waiting.
  3. Be mindful of others studying nearby. Close the door if your group is noisy.
  4. Turn off the entire system and the lights when you're finished to conserve energy.
  5. No food or drink, please.

When using Hector & Helen, please also follow the Computer Facilities Use policies presented in the Gustavus Guide.

Speech Recording Room

A speech recording room is available for use in Room 103B (lower level, Chapel side). Easy to use, the recording room consists of a computer with video recorder. The software is set up to allow you to email the recording to yourself. Perfect for practicing class presentations, speeches, and interviews. Sign up on the calendar hanging on the room's door. Reservations are forfeit after 20 minutes.

The library asks that students follow a few guidelines when using the recording room:

  1. Priority for the room is given to those using the video recorder.
  2. Limit your session to 1 hour during busy times.
  3. No food or drink, please.
