MISSION AND STATEMENT OF GOALS
Folke Bernadotte Memorial Library develops and promotes access
to information in support of the mission of Gustavus Adolphus College.
The Library provides resources and information services to meet the needs
of curriculum and research, the administration, and the intellectual life
of the college and wider community. The library advances the teaching mission
of the College through selecting and facilitating access to all forms and
formats of information, and instructing in the use, interpretation and
evaluation of information. The Library participates actively in the development
and integration of evolving technologies for information access. The Library
endeavors to create and nurture a learning environment that promotes respect,
fairness, diversity, and intellectual growth and excellence.
I. Develop and provide access to information and
research resources:

Select and acquire resources in collaboration with faculty in the disciplines
to support the liberal arts curriculum and to enrich the intellectual environment
of the College and greater community.

Organize and manage collections and other information resources by providing
appropriate forms of bibliographic access and working toward integration
of traditional and non-traditional formats.

Promote the preservation and conservation of library materials to ensure
the availability of the collection for future users.

Continue development and utilization of specialized collections that are
distinctive to Gustavus Adolphus College and are of national, historic
or scholarly interest.

Provide access to selected federal documents through the depository program
for the campus community and the residents of the 2nd Congressional
District.

Participate in resource sharing and other cooperative efforts to enhance
access to information and to further the development and use of resources.
II. Provide effective library services:

Direct new and existing resources to support learning activities and research.

Establish working relationships with faculty to support the curriculum

Create learning materials in print and online formats and lead sessions
to teach users the skills needed for successful research.

Assess student learning outcomes and use results in order to improve services.
III. Build and maintain an appropriate technological and physical environment:

Monitor developments in computing technologies to enhance the quality and
effectiveness of library operations and patron services.

Work closely with services both on and off campus which provide computing
support to achieve integrated and effective access to information resources
at the campus, state, regional and national level.

Maintain the physical facilities and equipment necessary for the proper
utilization, processing, storage and preservation of library materials
in all formats.

Maintain an attractive, healthful and safe environment for work and study.

Provide access to library facilities and services by all patrons and staff.
IV Manage the library effectively:

Support effective library planning and development through a collegial
management structure and consultation with the college community.

Develop a qualified and motivated staff through opportunities for professional
growth and by encouraging participation in professional and college activities.

Provide a work experience for student employees that complements their
education.

Use relevant library, workplace, and academic standards for assessment
and guidance to provide safe, responsive, effective, and ethical library
operations.
