periodicals available through PALS, Lexis/Nexis, and the CINAHL Nursing Collection, the library also has access to all periodicals published by Johns Hopkins University (dubbed Project Muse) and Academic Press (Ideal). Copyright Fees  Because of copyright law restrictions the library can only obtain five articles from any one journal published within that past five years through interlibrary loan.  Until recently, that meant we were out of luck in such cases--the only recourse was to physically go to a library that owned a subscription.  The library now has a membership in the Copyright Clearinghouse so that in the event we have exhausted our "fair use" limits for a particular journal we can pay the copyright fee and get a copy without violating federal law.  Because copyright fees can be quite expensive, librarians review each such request on a case-by-case basis.

New look  The library has a new layout, new furniture, and new carpet.  Additional cozy reading areas have been added on each floor near the windows, and the Hasselquist Room in the center of the main floor is complete.  In addition to what is visible, we've updated and added network wiring; now you can plug a laptop into jacks in the Hasselquist room and have access to the campus network, a capability we'll add to in the future.

WebPals  A web interface for PALS, the library catalog, provides simpler, point-and-click access to our catalog and many other databases.  Veteran PALS users and hackers-at-heart sometimes prefer the classic command-driven system, but new users find the simpler layout and display of options a vast improvement.  A plus: printing is a breeze.  A minus: a server that stands between us and the PALS server in Mankato sometimes has trouble handling the traffic.  If you receive an error message, try try again. Available at http://gustavus.edu/Academics/library/guspals.html

Improved Browsing  The library has made some changes in the way we handle the Student Senate Browsing Collection.  Rather than make choices from a book leasing company that supplies works primarily to public libraries, we now purchase and catalog books from any publisher.  This allows us to branch out and add what students really want to read rather than rely on a limited set of choices.  The student senate recommends purchases and supports the collection with a donation; the library adds to the funds for the collection and welcomes all recommendations.

What is a library these days?  In the past, a college library was, at its best, a combination of a carefully selected group of texts that matched curricular needs and a solid core of works that represented the best across the disciplines and in interdisciplinary areas.  It was designed locally to fit a specific community, yet was intended to reflect the world of learning in a microcosm.
Local definition of what a library is has begun to blur.  Through our PALS membership, our library has access to hundreds of full text periodicals.  They meet
