thelibrary opened a new classroom located near the front of the main floor. So far classes in biology, psychology, English, geography, music, philosophy, and other departments have made use of this facility.  When the roomis not reserved, it is available for public use and has proven very popularwith students. This room, equipped currently with sixteen Pentium II PCs,can be reserved for research instruction by calling x7556. We hope thisroom will assist in integrating research instruction into the curriculumwhere appropriate through hands-on experience with research tools.

Rewoven Home PageDuring January Term, two librarians collaborated on reviewing and redesigningthe library's web pages. The new look created by Don Zhou and Sandy Fuhr  provides easier accessto the contents of the pages, organizing resources bysubject, providing links to our onlineresources with annotations, and listing a wealth of information andguides under "TheLibrary."  Even WebPalshasa new customized front page, providing faster and simpler access to thedatabases used on our campus.  Suggestions are welcomed since thepages are continually being rewoven.

JSTORThelibrary has added a new resource to its periodicals collection.  JSTORan electronic journals archive, is a project of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundationto digitize back runs of core scholarly journals while making their contentselectronically searchable.  The 117 journals in the JSTOR archiveinclude the full text of each issue back to volume 1.  However, themost current two to five years are not in the archive.  That strategicdecision ensured that publishers would participate in the project withoutlosing their subscription base.  The unique search features of thearchive make it possible to conduct research in older journals in wayspreviously unimagined.  For example, a New York Times storyreports that linguists are using the collection to identify when wordsand phrases were first used in print.  Another researcher has usedthe collection to identify responses to the dust bowl in order to comparethem to the current global warming debate (January 10, 1999, D4). The original notion arose when the preident of the Mellon Foundation, atrustee at Denison University, speculated that digitizing old journalswould be a more cost-effective measure than adding an addition to theirlibrary to house such  materials, but search features are adding valuebeyond expectations.

New Classroom  One priority that emerged last year in thelibrary's strategic planning process was the need for a sizable and up-to-dateelectronic classroom.  The plethora of electronic resources availableto our students for research and the continued need to integrate theiruse with print resources prompted the need for a place for hands-onlearning.  This spring
