For articles try:

Academic Search Premier - an all-purpose database that includes current articles and citations from both popular magazines and scholarly journals. This will provide better coverage of contemporary, popular writers (e.g. Boyle and Franzen) than the databases listed below.

JSTOR - a full-text archive of scholarly journals in many fields including history and literature. Pay attention to the publication dates - many of these articles were published decades ago and reflect outdated critical or historical approaches. JSTOR does not include the most recent three-five years.

MLA Bibliography - the most complete listing of books, articles, book chapters, and dissertations in language and literature. Does not link to full text. Because it is so thorough, most of the books and articles found here have to be ordered through Interlibrary Loan.

The Making of America - a digital library of primary sources in 19th century American social history from the antebellum period through reconstruction. Includes the text of over 8,000 books and 50,000 journal articles. Only useful for writers who fall within this time-frame (e.g. Hawthorne)

For images try:

The Dictionary of Art. 34 vols. New York: Grove's Dictionaries, 1996. (Ref N 31 .D5 1996) An exhaustive encyclopedia of world art, containing articles written by scholars on artists, movements, works, and subjects, each followed by a selective bibliography.
