Library Catalogs
WebPALS
Our library catalog. Choose the Gustavus library, then select a search
type: keyword, author, title, etc. The Limit option lets you limit by
date, additional keywords, collection area, and so on. The Location line
lists the call number--where the book is shelved. Locations beginning
A--PQ are on the third floor. Locations PR--Z are shelved on the second
(main) floor.
MNLINK--Minnesota
Library Information Network
A shared catalog for many Minnesota libraries. Click on Search, then make a
selection on the next screen. One option (below the map) provides a
search of Minnesota college and university libraries. Use the
interlibrary loan button to request a book from another
library. Use your bar code number as your username, your last name as a
password.
Mankato & St. Peter Public Library

The St. Peter Public Library is brand new, beautiful, and just a few
blocks away from campus. If you head down (east) College Ave. and take a
left (north) onto Washington, the library is just two blocks from there.

Book Selection
- 50 years of notable books. (REF. Z1035.A1 F54 1996)
Coverage is by decade. Contains an author index and title index.
- Good books : a book lover's companion. (REF. Z1035 .G54
1982) Descriptive table of contents. Also has an author index and a brief
subject index.
- What to read : the essential guide for reading group members and
other book lovers. (REF. Z1035.9 .P4 1994) The table of contents
describes the book list topics. Also contains a title index and an author
index.
History of Reading
- American decades. (REF. E169.12 .A419 1994) Each volume
covers a different decade. Within each volume, look under 'Education' and
'Media' for information on books, publishing, literacy, and reading.
- St. James encyclopedia of popular culture. (REF. E169.1
.S764 2000) Use the subject index (in the last volume) to look up your
topic. You may want to try 'Publishers,' 'Magazines,' 'Novelists,' etc.
- History of the mass media in the United States : an
encyclopedia. (REF. P92.U5 H55 1998) Covers books, publishing, etc.
Literacy/Illiteracy
- Adult literacy/illiteracy in the United States : a handbook for
reference and research. (REF. LC151 .C64 1988) While this does not
have current information, it contains some very useful historical
statistics.
- Encyclopedia of language and education. (REF. P40.8 .E53
1997) Volume two covers literacy. In section one of volume 2, reading is
discussed.

- The Bookman's glossary. (REF. Z118 .B75 1975)
- An encyclopedia of the book; terms used in paper-making, printing,
bookbinding and publishing. (REF. Z118 .G55)
Electronic Resources
Expanded
Academic ASAP
Searches both general magazines and scholarly journals on a variety
of topics.
JSTOR
JSTOR is an archival database and does not include current journal
issues, but provides complete full-text back files for 78 journals from
more than 15 academic disciplines. All journals are fully searchable or
are available for browsing.
Lexis-Nexis
LexisNexis is a full text web-accessible database service that is
particularly strong in the areas of current news, legal information, and
business information. It is a vast resource, with over a billion
documents already available and over nine million new documents added
weekly.
MLA
This most important ongoing bibliography for literature and
linguistics is available for the years 1963 to the present in an
electronically searchable format.
Project Muse
Project Muse provides full text electronic access to over 40
scholarly
journals in humanities, the social sciences, and mathematics. This joint
venture comes from the Johns Hopkins University Press & the Milton S.
Eisenhower Library.
