Finding Books

MnPALS
Our library catalog. This link takes you into the "Basic Searches" screen where you can search by author, title, etc. The "Advanced Searches" option lets you limit by date, additional keywords, collection area, and so on. In your list of results, the Location column lists the call number--where the book is shelved. You can also choose other libraries to search from this catalog and ask for books through interlibrary loan (ILL).

St. Peter Public Library (Traverse de Sioux System)
The St. Peter Public Library is just a few blocks from campus. If you head down (east) College Ave. and take a left (north) onto Washington, the library is two blocks from there. Bring your Gustavus ID card to sign up for a public library card, which gives you access to all the Traverse de Sioux libraries! Once you have a library card, it's easy to request books through the online catalog.

Reference Works

Reference works are helpful at two points in your research: when starting out (by offering overview articles of, say, a writer and her work) or when nailing down unfamiliar terms, concepts, and topics that turn up during your research. Many reference book articles are written by experts and offer not only information but excellent bibliographies for further research.

Finding Articles

Databases for articles and other materials offer references to publications that may or may not be in this library; some databases offer full text of articles and others simply references. There are in-depth databases that cover publications in a particular field and others that are interdisciplinary. Databases can be accessed from a drop-down list on the library's main page; descriptions can be found here.

ERIC
The ERIC database is the major index to articles in education journals and reports of education research. ERIC contains citations and abstracts to over 900,000 articles and documents and is updated monthly. Some ERIC Documents are available full-text within the ERIC database. Those that are not available can be requested through interlibrary loan.

Education (SAGE)
Includes the full text of 26 peer-reviewed journals published by SAGE and participating societies from 1968-present. Topics covered include: adult and continuing education, educational administration, educational policy, elementary and secondary education, higher education, measurement and testing, and teaching methods.

Lexis Nexis
Search current news, including radio or tv broadcasts.

Teacher Reference Center
Provides indexing and abstracts for over 280 of the most popular teacher and administrator trade journals, periodicals and books to assist professional educators. Coverage includes assessment, curriculum development, literacy standards, and more.

Academic Search Premier
Academic Search Premier contains indexing for nearly 8,050 publications, with full text for more than 4,600 of those titles. This database covers biology, chemistry, education, engineering, humanities, physics, psychology, religion and theology, sociology, and other disciplines.

Professional Collection
Professional Collection includes more than 300 full-text journals for educators in the following areas: arts and humanities; child and adolescent psychology and development; drug and alcohol abuse; health/nutrition/fitness; learning disabilities; literature; school law; science and technology; social sciences; and sports/athletic training.

Note: If the database does not provide a full text to an article, check the Journal Locator to see if Gustavus owns or has access to the journal.
