Finding Books

MnPALS
Our library catalog. This link takes you into the "Advanced Searches" screen, where you can search by keyword, title, author, etc. You can also limit by date, additional keywords, collection area, and so on.

In your list of results, the Location column lists the call number, which tells you where the book is shelved. Call numbers beginning with A - PQ can be found on the top (third) floor of the library. Call numbers PR - Z are located on the second (main) floor. Tags on the side of the shelves will direct you further. Once you've located a book that looks useful, be sure to browse the shelves around it, as the Library of Congress classification system used in this library groups books on the same subject together.

To get books or articles that Gustavus does not own, use Interlibrary Loan.

MNLINK--Minnesota Library Information Network
A shared catalog for many Minnesota libraries. Choose 'Libraries-Academic' from the drop-down menu. Use the interlibrary loan button to request a book from another library. Use your bar code number as your username, your last name as a password.

Reference Works

Reference works are helpful at two points in your research: when starting out (by offering overview articles about your topic) or when nailing down unfamiliar terms, concepts, and topics that turn up during your research. Many reference book articles are written by experts and offer not only information but excellent bibliographies for further research.

Finding Articles

Databases for articles and other materials offer references to publications that may or may not be in this library; some databases offer full text of articles and others simply references. There are in-depth databases that cover publications in a particular field and others that are interdisciplinary. Databases can be accessed from a drop-down list on the library's main page; descriptions can be found here.

Academic Search Premier
Academic Search Premier contains full text coverage in biology, chemistry, education, engineering, humanities, physics, psychology, religion and theology, sociology, and other disciplines.

ATLA
The American Theological Library Association designed this database to support religious and theological scholarship. It contains citations to journal articles, essays in multi-author works, book reviews, and Doctor of Ministry projects.

AHSearch
This is an interdisciplinary database that offers one unique feature: if you do an advanced search, you can search by a cited reference. This way you can find articles published since a book or article came out that cites it. In some cases these are book reviews, but in others they are scholarly articles that used the cited reference. It's a good way to see how a work has had a ripple effect. It is not, however, infallible--don't assume something isn't being cited just because it doesn't show up here.

JSTOR
JSTOR is an archival database and does not include current journal issues, but provides complete full-text back files for 78 journals from more than 15 academic disciplines. All journals are fully searchable or are available for browsing.

MLA
MLA: International Bibliography of Books and Articles on the Modern Languages and Literatures. This most important ongoing bibliography for literature and linguistics is available for the years 1963 to the present in an electronically searchable format.

Project Muse
Project Muse provides full text electronic access to over 40 scholarly journals in humanities, the social sciences, and mathematics.
