STUDENT
ORIENTATION GUIDELINES
These guidelines have been prepared to help
you, the library student assistant, understand what is expected of you as an
employee of the Folke Bernadotte Memorial Library and the Lund Music-Speech
Library.
The
following policies and guidelines are to be followed by all library student
assistants, regardless of where you work in the library. However, each
supervisor will have his/her own set of expectations based on the activities
and responsibilities of the particular department. It is your responsibility to
be certain you understand and are aware of these.
TIMECLOCK AND PAYROLL
You should report to the library as soon as
possible in the first week of classes each term. You and your supervisor will
then determine your schedule the term.
Your position as a student assistant will
require learning many things in a short time. Your immediate supervisor will
arrange for your training in the certain tasks or activities you will be
required to perform. It is important that you attend meetings and ask questions
when you are in doubt or when you do not know. This is the way to learn and to
avoid making errors.
You will clock in and out on a computer time
clock when arriving for and leaving work.
Students working during the academic year are paid on the 15th
of each month.
Student assistants working four consecutive
hours are entitled to a 15-minute break. Students working full days when
classes are not in session are to punch out for a 30-minute lunch break. These
students are also entitled to two 15-minute breaks, one in the morning and one
in the afternoon, without clocking out.
ATTENDANCE
You are expected to report for work
according to the work schedule you and your supervisor have planned together,
unless you have made previous arrangements with your supervisor.
When you are unable to work due to a
sickness or an emergency, it is your responsibility to let your
supervisor know as soon as possible.
Your absence will be considered unexcused if you do not do so. Voicemail and email are considered
acceptable means of communication in such situations.
A first unexcused absence will receive a
verbal warning. A second will result in a written dismissal warning. The
third occurrence will result in termination of library employment. It could also lead to loss of your work/study
award. Scheduled work hours occur during Christmas in Christ Chapel; Greek
Rush; and all break periods when school is in session - Nobel Conference, May
Day, Fall Break, and Reading Day, and Finals. Regular work schedules should be
followed unless you have made prior arrangements with your supervisor.
WORK RESPONSIBILITIES AND EVALUATION
You will receive training and assignments
from your immediate supervisor. Each year
after Spring Break you will be evaluated by your supervisor for performance
review, salary, and retention purposes.
You will be evaluated on attendance, dependability, initiative, cooperation,
quality and quantity of work. This is
your opportunity for you and your supervisor to converse, in private, about
your work in the library as well as an opportunity for you to offer
suggestions.
DRESS & CONDUCT
Although there is not a rigid dress code for
working in the library, you are expected to dress appropriately. Shoes must be
worn. Halter tops or swimsuits, for example, are not considered suitable. No
Greek initiation clothing should be worn during your shift. Use of headphones
at a public service desk is not acceptable.
The library atmosphere should be conducive
to research and work. Please do your part by avoiding extended or loud
conversations with your friends or fellow workers that interfere with your
library duties and with the work of library users.
TELEPHONES
Personal calls should not be made on
telephones in the library, nor should you receive personal calls unless it is
an emergency. A telephone located outside the entrance of the library may be
used without charge for personal calls during non-work hours.
Staff members will answer the telephones as
often as possible, but you should not hesitate to do so when a staff member is
not available or when you see a staff member is busy. Messages should be
clearly written, signed by you, and placed in the staff member’s mailbox.
If time allows, and with your supervisor’s
approval, you may briefly access your email during you work shift. You may also
use the Internet to assist patrons and for personal research. Please do not abuse this privilege.
