International Student Pre-Orientation

 
 
Typical schedule of events/activities

Mandatory Arrival: approximately 1 week before classes begin.

Pre-orientation is designed to facilitate your transition into cultural and academic life. Students will review immigration regulations, open bank accounts, review the international student insurance requirements, register or change class schedule. There will also be time to relax and get settled before the other returning students arrive.

Day one

Students Arrive-Welcome to Gustavus Adolphus College!
  • International Gustie Greeters and International Driver assist with airport pickup and moving into rooms.
  • Optional informal activity (to be arranged with International Gustie Greeters)

Day two

  • Welcome -meet International Education Staff, International Gustie Greeters/Driver, and other Gustavus representatives.
  • Group photo
  • Tour of campus with International Gustie Greeters.
  • Dining Service presentation: Dietary and Vegetarian Choices
  • U.S. Higher Education presentation-Introductory lecture on philosophy of liberal arts college
  • Group sessions
    • Course registration /changes
    • Visa documents: copying your passport and immigration documents
    • Social Security application
    • Student employment documents:I-9 employment verification, W-4
    • ID pictures taken
Evening
  • Reception for new students and parents - Greeting by Gustavus representatives
  • Social activity with Gustie Greeters

Day three

  • Immigration issues
  • Heath Care and Insurance issues
  • Study skills for international students-preparing for the U.S. college experience
  • Bank account options by St. Peter bank representatives
  • Settle in -locate important areas on campus with assistance from International Gustie Greeters

Day Four

  • Open bank accounts /Briefly tour St. Peter
  • Teaching Assistants-Orientation to Department of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures
  • Discussion on adjustment to campus, climate, and U.S. life
  • Student Life - International Cultures Club and other student activities/involvements
  • Dinner with all Gustie Greeters
  • Informal Gathering

Day five

  • Shopping trip

Join other students for all new student orientation
