Secondary Education Licensure Course Requirements

 
 

Students in the Secondary Education Licensure Program who are recommended for graduation from Gustavus Adolphus College and for a secondary teaching license must complete the following (subject to change due to MN Licensure Rule changes):

  1. All college General requirements for the Bachelor of Arts Degree. (Curriculum I or Curriculum II courses)
  2. A teaching major within the following choices:
  • Communication Arts and Literature
  • Earth and Space Science
  • Life Science
  • Chemistry
  • Physics
  • Mathematics
  • Health
  • Physical Education
  • Social Studies
  • Instrumental Music
  • Vocal Music
  • Visual Arts
  • World Languages & Culture (French, German, Spanish)

The Department of Education offers licensure programs for students interested in teaching in secondary schools grades 5 - 12. 

For those who wish to teach Art, Music, Physical Education, Health, or a World Language the license is for grades Kindergarten through 12. Each of these teaching licenses requires a Bachelor's Degree from Gustavus in a teaching major and the completion of the professional studies sequence.  A student may also wish to earn a coaching minor.

___ I. EDU 398 Human Relations (take concurrently with EDU 390)
___ J. EDU 390 Student Needs

Education Methods Block (These classes are taken during the same semester)
___ K. EDU 350 Reading in the Content Area
___ L. EDU 351 Secondary Methods and Materials
___ M. EDU 368 Secondary Interdisciplinary Models and Practicum ___ N. EDU 353-363 Special Methods in the Teaching Major (except for PE and Health, Com/Lit, and Foreign Language)

Student Teaching Semester (These classes are taken during the same semester)
___ O. EDU 399 Seminar in Elementary and Secondary Education
___ P.  EDU 394 Secondary Directed Teaching (5-12 Licensure)

double majors and those students teaching abroad

Coaching Minor for Elementary and
Secondary Education Majors

Coaching Certification is no longer an option or required in Minnesota.  However, a coaching minor allows graduates to document their competence to be a head coach to officials in school districts that hire them.
