Elementary and Secondary Programs

The Department of Education offers an Elementary Education Major, with Kindergarten through Grade 8 licensure. General licensure is for Grades K-6 with a Middle School area of Concentration for teaching Grades 5-8. The Secondary Licensure in Grades 5 through 12 accompanies an area major. Licensure for grades Kindergarten through 12 is also offered for selected majors.

Education Students

The Minnesota Board of Teaching approves all of the Teacher Education Programs at Gustavus Adolphus College for the preparation of licensed teachers. The National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education accredits the Department of Education at Gustavus Adolphus College. Students who complete the selected teacher education program receive a Bachelor of Arts Degree and are licensed to teach in all Minnesota schools as well as throughout the United States.

Teacher education students may also qualify for a coaching minor by completing the course requirements as outlined by the Department of Physical Education and Health.

Did You Know?

Six Gustavus students will be part of a student teaching experience in Barrow, the northern most point of Alaska this spring. Along with their student teaching duties, the students will be immersed in the culture of the native Inupiaq Tribe, a tribe that relies heavily on hunting, fishing, and whaling in order to survive. The Barrow participants will also be afforded an opportunity to study global warming issues with Steve Hastings, a scientist from the Barrow Arctic Science Consortium.
