Six weeks from June 27th - August 11th, 2008 (start/end dates flexible) Looking for motivated undergraduates majoring in biology, chemistry, geology, environmental science who are interested in pursuing a career in ecology or environmental science.   The undergraduate will have the opportunity to create a poster for the Univ. of MN’s Summer Undergraduate Research Symposium and work with me on writing up the results of our research for publication.

United Negro College Fund + Merck Undergraduate Science Research Scholarship Awards

Fifteen awards will be made in 2008. Each award consists of scholarship up to $25,000, Two summer internships at a Merck research facilty with stipends totaling a minimum of $10,000.

Eligilibilty criteria includes: African American, Junior (who will be a degree cadndiate in 2008-09 academic year, life or physical science major interstedin biomedical research (first professional and engineering majors not eligible), GPA of 3.3 on 4.0 scale, commit to and be eligible for 2 sumer internships, US citizen

NASA Internships
Undergraduate Student Research Program (NASA - USRP) offers undergraduate students across the United States internships at NASA centers under the supervision of technical mentors. This prestigious program seeks rising sophomore, junior and senior students in the disciplines of engineering, math, computer science and life/physical sciences. Students may apply for 10-week summer session and 15-week spring or fall session. NASA-USRP provides students with hands-on, real-life research experiences that challenge, inspire and bring practical application to complement the students' academic education. Stipends are $6,000 for the summer session and $9,000 for fall and spring, plus a round-trip travel allowance.

Iowa State University - Computational Materials Science - Summer Research Experience

The University of Kansas - Department of Chemistry (NSF-REU)
JUNIORS and SOPHOMORES Planning a Career in Chemistry: engage in 10 weeks (May 22 - July 21, 2008) of full-time research on a project of your choice (over 20 projects in all areas of chemistry have been planned. Hope College in Holland, MI (NSF-REU)
Chemistry & Biochemistry:10 week program for any undergrad who will be enrolled in Fall of 2008, working directly with faculty mentor. Choose from a wide range of externally-funded faculty research projects. Social activites with 100 fellow research students occur most evenings and weekends. Washington DC - Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (NIST-SURF)
The National Institute of Standards and Technology offers the Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship program (NIST-SURF) for students majoring in physics, materials science, chemistry, applied mathematics, computer science, or engineering. There may be research opportunities for students with other majors.

Students participate in laboratories from May 27th-August 8th in Washington DC and receive a $4,000 stipend for 11 weeks, plus housing and travel costs. Students unable to make the full 11-week program will be paid at $363.64 per week.

Proposal deadline is Feb. 15, 2008. This proposal includes a portion completed by an institutional representative (see below) and a set of materials provided by each student applicant. As a point of information, six Gustavus students have secured NIST-SURF grants since 2001. Bob Weisenfeld serves as the institutional representative and is available to assist students in proposal preparation. Stony Brook University, NY - 2008 REU Chemistry Summer Research Program
Undergrads majoring in chemistry (or a related chemical science field) are invited to apply. The program is sponsored by the National Science Foundation.

10 week program (June 2 - August 8), work closely with post-doc associates, grad students and other undergrads. Stowers Scholars Program - Stowers Institute for Medical Research - Kansas City, MO

Nine-week (June 2 - July 31, 2008) summer experience in a stimulating scientific environment with state-of-the-art laboratories equipped with the most advanced technology with interdisciplinary approach to research with a Stowers scientist. Students should have completed 60 credit hours of undergraduate coursework, 3.5 GPA and be enrolled in a degree-granting program in biology, biochemistry, molecular biology, genetics, chemistry, physics, computing, engineering, mathematics, or a related field. Each scholar will receive a $3,000 stipend, and non-Kansas City residents may apply for a housing allowance.

University of Alamaba - 2008 Summer Undergraduate Research Participation (SURP) Program
Students with strong Chemistry backgrounds are encouraged to apply to the 2008 REU Program, sponsored by NSF at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. The 10 week program begins June 1, 2008. Participants will be given a $4000 stipend plus hosing in apartments. (Gustavus students have enjoyed this program in the past.)

Montana State University - Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU)

Ten students spend the summer (June - August, 2008) working on independent research projects in chemical biology in the labs of their assigned faculty advisors. All students work closely with their graduate student mentors as well. Safety training and laboratory orientation are provided on the first day of the program. Departmental faculty members teach a series of workshops covering topics including NMR, mass spectroscopy, X-ray crystallography, EPR spectroscopy, computational chemistry, bioassays/separation science, scientific ethics, careers in chemistry, and applying to graduate school. REU group meetings allow the students to present their ongoing research to their peers. Students are encouraged to participate in social events such as a whitewater rafting trip, a trip to Yellowstone National Park, a day hike, and barbeques and bowling. The culmination of the summer research program is a poster symposium and awards dinner.

North Dakato State University- Summer Research Experience for Undergraduate Students

Ten weeks (May 26 - August 1, 2008) in Fargo, ND. Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF 2007)

SURF 2007 and International Research Experience (IREP) Programs in Materials Science and Engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology, in Atlanta, Georgia. SURF2007 is sponsored by the NSF under the Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Program, and by the Georgia Institute of Technology.

SURF2007 is an eight week research experience program (May 30 to July 25, 2007) open to undergraduates in any science or engineering discipline at U.S. universities, for hands-on participation in materials research. stipend and a housing allowance. Bioengineering and Bioinformatics Summer Institute (BBSI) for Summer 2007

The BBSI at the University of Pittsburgh is an NIH-NSF funded summer research program. It is open to undergraduate students in their junior and senior year and to graduate students entering their first and second year. They are looking for strong quantitative science backgrounds.

The program runs from May 21-July 27, 2007. Stipends ($3,200 for undergrads) and free housing and local transportation. The BBSI provides a unique training experience in the field of computational biology and bioinformatics by offering interdisciplinary lectures and a mentored state-of-the-art research project.

The Institute for Biomolecular Sciences (IBiS) at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse
The IBiS REU at the Univ. of Wisconsin LaCrosse will serve as a site for an NSF Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) 10 week summer program in 2007. It will support 10 students who will work closely with faculty mentors and other undergraduate and Masters level research students investigating questions in many fields including biochemistry, bioinformatics, cell biology, classical and molecular genetics, development, immunology, microbiology, and synthetic organic chemistry. Student participants will receive a $4,000 stipend and campus housing and meals.

University of Nevada, Reno - REU
Undergraduate summer research program in Chemistry - June 11th through August 17th, 2007, culminating in a symposium.

New York University and City College of New York REU SESMI
Summer research opportunity for undergraduates interested in performing cutting-edge research in New York City during the summer of 2007. This program, the NYU-CCNY REU for the Science and Engineering of Soft Materials and Interfaces, was recently established with financial support from the National Science Foundation. SESMI unites emerging young scientists and engineers from four-year colleges and research universities with New York University and City College of New York research groups.

Tthe SESMI program will be from May 27-August 4, 2007. SESMI research students will receive a stipend of $4000 and will be reimbursed for travel expenses up to $500. The students also will receive a research grant of $1200 for materials and supplies. All SESMI students, regardless of whether they are performing research at NYU or CCNY, and dormitory style housing in the Palladium Residence Hall (across from Union Square in lower Manhattan) will be provided, at no cost.

PolyCamp-University of Oregon

Oak Ridge Associated Universities Internships (ORAU)
The program is for students majoring in chemistry, biology, environmental sciences (and other disciplines) who are U.S. Citizens and are entering their junior or senior year, or who have completed their first year of grad school. The program iasts approximately 10 weeks during summer term and includes bi-weekly paycheck and limited travel reimbursement. Oak Ridge Associated Universities is located in Oak Ridge TN. Other internship locations include Washington DC, Maryland, Colorado and California.
