Six weeks from June 27th - August 11th, 2008 (start/end dates flexible) Looking for motivated undergraduates majoring in biology, chemistry, geology, environmental science who are interested in pursuing a career in ecology or environmental science. The undergraduate will have the opportunity to create a poster for the Univ. of MN’s Summer Undergraduate Research Symposium and work with me on writing up the results of our research for publication.

Fifteen awards will be made in 2008. Each award consists of scholarship up to $25,000, Two summer internships at a Merck research facilty with stipends totaling a minimum of $10,000.

Students participate in laboratories from May 27th-August 8th in Washington DC and receive a $4,000 stipend for 11 weeks, plus housing and travel costs. Students unable to make the full 11-week program will be paid at $363.64 per week.
Proposal deadline is Feb. 15, 2008. This proposal includes a portion completed by an institutional representative (see below) and a set of materials provided by each student applicant. As a point of information, six Gustavus students have secured NIST-SURF grants since 2001. Ten students spend the summer (June - August, 2008) working on independent research projects in chemical biology in the labs of their assigned faculty advisors. All students work closely with their graduate student mentors as well. Safety training and laboratory orientation are provided on the first day of the program. Departmental faculty members teach a series of workshops covering topics including NMR, mass spectroscopy, X-ray crystallography, EPR spectroscopy, computational chemistry, bioassays/separation science, scientific ethics, careers in chemistry, and applying to graduate school. REU group meetings allow the students to present their ongoing research to their peers. Students are encouraged to participate in social events such as a whitewater rafting trip, a trip to Yellowstone National Park, a day hike, and barbeques and bowling. The culmination of the summer research program is a poster symposium and awards dinner.

SURF 2007 and International Research Experience (IREP) Programs in Materials Science and Engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology, in Atlanta, Georgia. SURF2007 is sponsored by the NSF under the Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Program, and by the Georgia Institute of Technology.
SURF2007 is an eight week research experience program (May 30 to July 25, 2007) open to undergraduates in any science or engineering discipline at U.S. universities, for hands-on participation in materials research. stipend and a housing allowance. The BBSI at the University of Pittsburgh is an NIH-NSF funded summer research program. It is open to undergraduate students in their junior and senior year and to graduate students entering their first and second year. They are looking for strong quantitative science backgrounds.
The program runs from May 21-July 27, 2007. Stipends ($3,200 for undergrads) and free housing and local transportation. The BBSI provides a unique training experience in the field of computational biology and bioinformatics by offering interdisciplinary lectures and a mentored state-of-the-art research project.

Tthe SESMI program will be from May 27-August 4, 2007. SESMI research students will receive a stipend of $4000 and will be reimbursed for travel expenses up to $500. The students also will receive a research grant of $1200 for materials and supplies. All SESMI students, regardless of whether they are performing research at NYU or CCNY, and dormitory style housing in the Palladium Residence Hall (across from Union Square in lower Manhattan) will be provided, at no cost.
